Ayaka Nakama sees herself as a dancer who wants to be choreographed by everything that exists in the world. Freeway Dance is a time and place where she considers other people’s memories of their first dance as her choreography and lets her body dance them.
The piece flows through a playlist of songs and dances, memories appearing and disappearing in the decorum of a Japanese garden surrounded by other elements: a bookshelf, a bar, a swing, a capsule-toy vending machine, etc. Phenomena that induce new dance, stimulated by her movement, lurk everywhere in the garden. The audience moves spontaneously to discover them or encounter Ayaka’s dances.
The four-hour performance also includes a food break, where the audience can relax together or alone and have another sense stimulated.
